Mauna Kea Observatory The Gemini Observatory has two 8.1-metre telescopes covering the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This time-lapse view shows Gemini North atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The orange bands emanating from the telescope dome are produced by the telescope’s ‘adaptive optics’ system, which uses a laser to project an artificial star on the night sky to compensate for image distortions caused by Earth’s atmosphere.
